I have been partnered with K9 Misty, a 10 year old yellow Lab, since September 2007. She was originally in the program at the Southeastern Guide Dog School but after not being able to complete her guide dog training, she changed careers and became an accelerant detection canine. She resides with my wife and daughter in our residence and has become a part of the family. She also lives with a cat and they have a good relationship with each other. Everyone that comes in contact with Misty is very surprised how well-behaved she is. When she was put in service with the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Bureau of Fire & Arson Investigations in September 2007, she worked 34 fires in just that first 4 months. Since that time, she has averaged over 100 fires investigations per year and has currently investigated 974 fires over the course of her career. She has been involved in 12 homicide cases and in one of those cases she was instrumental in identifying where the body was dragged from. She also alerted on the clothing of the three suspects involved in that arson fire case. Even though Misty is one of the busiest accelerant detection canines in North America, she still has time for children. She averages three to four school visits a year and has been seen by 1,500 students during this time period. Even though she has been working for over six years, she hasn’t lost her drive to work.
