Monster is a Havanese who had a rough start. At about 2-3 months old his spine was broken and he was turned in as a sick stray to a veterinarian in Northern California. The kind vet treated Monster and for two months, looked for the owner. The day his picture appeared for adoption, we called and made arrangements to drive 6-hours from Newport Beach to pick him up. This smart, cute, love-machine was scared and huged us most of the way to his forever home.
The next day he was introduced to the beach which is his favorite place rivaled only by car rides. Within a week, Monster was learning basic commands followed shortly by tricks. He loves other animals and people (especially children). Monster is flexible and adaptable.
With encouragement from our trainer, we found a pet therapy training program and worked to earn our certification. We took agility training at the same time and then qualified for the AKC Good Citizen Award.
Monster and I are a pet therapy team specializing in the infusion/chemo ward. As a breast cancer survivor, I'm at home with those being treated and Monster loves giving and receiving smiles. The nurses, doctors, patients and their families in the infusion ward need a respite from the disease(s) which sap their focus. We provide the diversion which allows them to get a hug, sometimes a lick, and to hug back. We help the patients and all those caring for them.
