When Roman was born on Thanksgiving morning in 2007, he was the youngest of a litter of six. I had been assisting his mother, Loki, with the birth of each puppy before him. After his mother gave birth to him, I noticed she was having trouble getting the birth sac off of him. I knew that if I didn't act soon, the puppy would suffocate. I quickly grabbed the surgical scissors I had on hand and carefully cut through the fleshy sac. Loki, now able to get a grip with her teeth, took care of the rest and it wasn't long before the tiny pup was breathing.
Ever since I can remember, my life has been filled with dogs and yet never have I known a dog with a more gentle demeanor, a bigger heart, or a sweeter soul.
I can't tell you if Roman knows that it was me that saved his life that day, but he's always been my baby boy. Always by my side for a walk around the yard or around the neighborhood. There to comfort me when I am sad and give me a shoulder to cry on. He is my best friend and my confidant. He is my hero.
I took this picture while spending time with Roman in my front yard, playing with him as I often do, enjoying his sweet company as he dances around me, occasionally coming close enough for me to pet and kiss him.
