In the state of South Carolina, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) provides quality manpower and technical assistance to law enforcement agencies. SLED agents conduct investigations on behalf of the state as directed by the Governor and Attorney General. Sometimes quality manpower isn’t enough when it comes to fire investigations so they call in a secret weapon…K-9 Gunner. Gunner is a 4 year old black Labrador mix who came from the Northern Florida Lab Rescue. He showed that he had the energy and skills to become a great working dog so rather than stay in an animal shelter he has become a crime fighter for the State of South Carolina. Gunner investigates fires in forty-six (46) counties throughout South Carolina. Since May 2013, he has responded to 55 fires and has been involved in the investigation of 14 fire related deaths. Gunner was also involved in a double homicide investigation where after three days of severe rains, he still alerted to accelerants used in the arson fire. Gunner never seems to have a bad day or ever slow down. He has a very outgoing personality and never meets a stranger. His biggest fans are kids and over the past 10 months, Gunner has visited several schools and day care center where we teach the children about fire safety. The impact that K-9 Gunner has made in South Carolina is beyond measure. He is an amazing partner!
