Description

K9 Ember is a 7 year old yellow Lab with the Florida State Fire Marshal’s office. We have been partners since September 2007. Law enforcement agencies call upon Ember to help them with investigations at fire scenes. She sniffs out accelerants that have been used to start arson fires. This evidence is critical when convicting dangerous criminals. On December 27, 2012 firefighters from Martin County were called to a blaze at a foreclosed home. As they fought to contain the fire, firefighters became overwhelmed by the heat and a rookie firefighter was critically injured with burns over 50% of his body. K9 Ember was called in to investigate the scene to help determine if the fire was deliberately set. Her hard work helped find evidence that led to arrest of the former owner for attempted murder and arson. Without her accelerant detection training, the arsonist may have gotten away with the crime. Thankfully the injured firefighter was released from the hospital after five months of therapy that included eight surgeries. When she isn’t working fires, Ember visits elementary and middle schools to show how she “sniffs out” accelerants. The kids are eager to ask questions and watch her work. At home she is a normal dog who enjoys laying in the sun, playing with tennis balls and with her canine buddy Justice, a 10 pound Maltese. This superdog does have her Kryptonite – she can never leave a squeaker in a stuffed toy!
